Russia on Tuesday accused Europe of becoming a risk to global stability with its actions, while criticizing the role of the United States in peace efforts to end the war in Ukraine. This follows from the speech of the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow, which was reported by the AFP agency.
- Russia describes Europe’s military support to Ukraine as a threat to global stability.
- Sergey Lavrov claims that the supply of weapons to Ukraine escalates the conflict, not solves it.
- Moscow accuses the United States of escalating the war with sanctions and biased mediation.
- G7 leaders, including Donald Trump, promise more air defenses and sanctions against Ukraine.
- Russia is ready to defend Belarus according to the union treaty, warns against the spread of fighting.
According to AFP, Lavrov declared that Europe is turning into a significant threat to international peace and security due to the provision of military support to Ukraine. According to him, these arms deliveries are part of the escalation of the conflict, not the way to its solution.
USA under fire
The head of Russian diplomacy also focused on the United States. It emerged from his words that, according to Moscow, Washington no longer fulfills the role of an impartial actor in the negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine. On the contrary, according to Lavrov, the US is moving towards further tightening through stricter sanctions against Russia.
According to AFP, the negotiations led by the United States were paralyzed for a long time due to a parallel conflict in the Middle East, which was unleashed in February by the United States together with Israel by attacking Iran. The war in the region has demanded Washington’s attention and slowed diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
G7 summit and sanctions
However, at the G7 summit in June, the leaders again addressed Ukraine. According to AFP, including US President Donald Trump, they agreed on a joint final statement. In it, they pledged to increase supplies of air defenses to Kiev and tighten sanctions targeting Russia’s “war economy” to increase economic and political pressure on Moscow.
Trump, after returning to the White House in 2025, is pressuring both sides to resume peace talks, according to the agency. Despite this effort, however, American mediation brought only minimal results, as Kyiv refuses to accept Moscow’s maximum demands and Russia does not want to back down from them.
Warning against Belarus
In his speech, Lavrov also drew attention to efforts to involve Belarus directly in the war in Ukraine and thus expand the geography of the fighting. According to him, such a development would further complicate any political or diplomatic solution to the conflict.
He also recalled the existence of an agreement on security guarantees between Russia and Belarus within the framework of the Union State. He emphasized that Moscow is ready to take a number of steps enshrined in this agreement, if necessary to ensure the security of Belarus and the Union State as a whole.
Zelensky’s controversial call
Lavrov also commented on the words of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called on Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to “restore order” in his country. The head of Russian diplomacy called this demand unreasonable and criticized Kyiv’s position.
Earlier, according to AFP, Zelensky accused Belarus of deploying signal boosters for Russian drones in border areas. Lukashenko called on him to remove these devices within a week, adding that if Minsk does not do so, Ukraine will remove them on its own.
