The Greek gods were worshiped in sacred areas (temene). Temples were the focal point, but sacrifices and festivals usually took place outdoors. This sacred area was considered the property of the deity, while humans were only responsible for its management and maintenance. It is only in the last 15 years that the temple area around the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus has increasingly become the focus of Austrian research.
