Maduro addresses, from prison, the "beloved people of Venezuela" after the double earthquake

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, sent a message of solidarity this Thursday to the Venezuelan people after the two earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7 on the open Richter scale that have left at least 164 dead and more than a thousand injured in the country, according to the second official balance sheet.

Although he is imprisoned in the United States after his capture on January 3 in the framework of a US military operation, Maduro has called for “national unity, serenity and love” in “this difficult hour”, as he indicated in a message broadcast on social networks.

“Beloved people of Venezuela: in the face of the powerful earthquake that has hit our homeland, Cilia (Flores) and I raise our prayers for each affected family, for the injured, for those who suffer and for all our people,” he said, in relation to his wife, also in custody.

“Maximum union, maximum solidarity and maximum action”

“Today, the word is one: maximum union, maximum solidarity and maximum action. May no one be left alone, may each community take care of its children, its grandparents, its sick, and may we all accompany the work of the rescue forces,” he stated.

Thus, he has highlighted the importance of “helping, protecting, sharing, lifting up and rebuilding.” “Venezuela has faced great trials and we are also going to emerge from this strong, with faith, discipline and solidarity. Our hearts and prayers are with you. May God bless and protect Venezuela!” he concluded.

The country’s authorities have warned that the preliminary death toll figures do not include the balance of the state of La Guaira, which they have described as a “disaster zone” with “dozens of collapsed buildings.”
