New York / Washington – The number of deaths in custody of the US immigration agency ICE has reached its highest level in more than a decade, according to human rights groups. The share of the total number of ICE detainees increased by 140 percent from January 2025 – when US President Donald Trump took office – to January 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released Thursday by Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights.
