An analysis of the request for historical reparation made by the Metalworkers Union of São Paulo and Mogi das Cruzes, due to persecution during the military regime, was scheduled for July 2nd. It will be the first union body to have the case analyzed by the commission, linked to the Ministry of Finance.
Among the events reported is the fact that the union headquarters, which was located in the center of the capital, was surrounded by soldiers on the morning of March 31, 1964, even before the coup was consolidated.
The entity participated in the resistance to the dictatorship, and activists and leaders suffered persecution from the government of the time. Many were fired, and some suffered physical violence that led to their deaths.
Among the fatal victims linked to the union are Olavo Hanssen, who died at the age of 33 in 1970, Luiz Hirata, who died at the age of 27 in 1971, Nelson Pereira de Jesus, who died at the age of 22 in 1978 and Santo Dias, who died at the age of 37 in 1979.
The union is not seeking financial compensation, but rather historical recognition of the role it played in resisting the dictatorship and the violence it suffered
“We resist, we fight for redemocratization and Diretas Já. But we need to continue to be mobilized, in defense of democracy and the democratic rule of law, so that there are no political setbacks or the return of authoritarian, violent and criminal regimes like the one that lasted 21 years in the country’s recent history, from 1964 to 1985”, says Miguel Torres, current president of the union.
