Located in the heart of the Ria Formosa estuarine area, Praia dos Cavacos is one of the most peaceful and discreet corners of the Algarve. According to , this small beach is in the heart of the mangroves, next to a group of warehouses supporting fishing and shellfish collection, in a bay where several boats remain anchored between bright salt marshes and banks of low vegetation.
More than a sandy beach, this is a space marked by the calm of the estuary and the natural life that surrounds it. The beach is narrow, but the water area is wide and sheltered, offering calm swimming conditions. To the west, there is the headquarters and Interpretation Center of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where a tidal mill also stands out, linked to the history and traditional use of this territory.
A place to observe the nature of the Ria Formosa
The area around Praia dos Cavacos is especially interesting for those who like to observe birds, plants and small animals typical of mangroves. According to EuroVelo Portugal, it is possible to find halophyte plants in this area, adapted to saline environments, as well as small crabs that hide in the mud and on the banks.
Birdlife is one of the main attractions of this corner. Among the species that can be seen are stilts, avocets, fusels, lesser sandpipers, white storks, flamingos and several birds from the heron family. Many look for food in the mud of the estuary, using their long beaks to find small organisms among the water and sediment.
Despite the presence of structures linked to fishing and seafood, Praia dos Cavacos maintains a serene atmosphere, far from the busier image of other beaches in the Algarve. The most striking sound, and perhaps the most unexpected, is that of the trains that pass regularly on the railway line located just behind the beach.
This contrast is part of the place’s identity. Between the silence of the salt marshes, the brightness of the salt flats, the feeding birds and the occasional train passing by, Praia dos Cavacos presents a more reserved Algarve, where nature and local daily life meet without rushing.
