The mayor of New York, (Democratic Party), published this Saturday (June 27, 2026) a video in which he appears diving in a suit in a public swimming pool in the city. The recording was made during the ceremony that marked the 90th anniversary of the inauguration of the first large municipal swimming pools.
The swim referenced the summer of 1936, when then-mayor Fiorello La Guardia and parks commissioner Robert Moses opened 11 large pools spread across the city’s 5 districts.
The structures were built after the when the United States suffered a severe economic recession. They were part of a public works program financed by the Works Progress Administration, an initiative of New Deal aimed at generating jobs and expanding infrastructure.
Mamdani participated in the celebration alongside dozens of children in the pool . During the action, he entered the water wearing a suit, contradicting the local rule that requires all patrons to wear a swimsuit.
In the video published by the mayor, the message appears: “Cool down, New York” (“Stay cool, New York”, in English).
