Algarve on the podium of the best destinations in the world for boat excursions: there is another Portuguese destination on the list

Two Portuguese destinations appear among the best rated in the world for boat excursions, according to an analysis by , a tourist group that operates worldwide, based on traveler reviews. The Algarve occupies third place in the global ranking, with a score of 8.78 out of ten possible, while Madeira appears shortly after, in fourth position, with 8.72 points. The list is led by Phuket, Thailand.

Interest in boardwalks has been gaining momentum among tourists. According to an independent study carried out by Appinio for TUI Musement, more than 88% of respondents say they are interested or very interested in booking boat trips during their holiday. Half-day experiences are among the most popular, especially when they combine coastal landscapes, swimming stops and visits to several points of interest on the same route.

Caves, cliffs and coves help explain the highlight

In the Algarve case, travelers’ assessments are explained by the combination of golden cliffs, sea caves and small coves hidden between rock formations. Tours near places such as the Ferragudo castle, the Carvoeiro lighthouse and the Benagil cave are among the most valued experiences by those who travel this coastal strip by boat.

Madeira appears immediately behind the Algarve, occupying fourth place in the ranking. On the island, the sea routes stand out due to the Atlantic landscape, which is more rugged and marked by high cliffs, deep waters and coastal areas of great natural value. According to TUI Musement, excursions along the southwest coast allow you to see points such as Cabo Girão, around 580 meters high, and include stops for swimming in places such as Cais da Lapa.

Another attraction associated with Madeira is the possibility of spotting marine life during tours. Dolphins and turtles can appear along the routes, reinforcing the appeal of these experiences for those looking for direct contact with nature and the Atlantic.

TUI Musement’s analysis was based on reviews from travelers who took boat excursions between May 2024 and May 2026. To be included in the ranking, each destination had to gather at least 1,150 reviews. Phuket leads the ranking, with 8.89 points, followed by Khao Lak, also in Thailand, with 8.80. Then come Algarve, Madeira, Pafos, Kárpatos, Sal, Tenerife, Protaras and Fuerteventura.
