Brazil fights to maintain the taboo of not being eliminated from the World Cup by a ‘non-traditional’ team

The Japanese team has evolved in recent years, it is true, but it is still far from being considered a force in world football. In the history of World Cups, Asians have reached, at most, the round of 16: in 2002, 2010, 2018 and 2022. In retrospect, since 1930, Brazil has never been eliminated by a “non-traditional” team. Below, the “executioners”:

Opponents who eliminated the Brazilian team in World Cups

  • 1930 – Yugoslavia (group stage)
  • 1934 – Spain (round of 16 – there was no group stage)
  • 1938 – Italy (semi-final)
  • 1950 – Uruguay (final quadrangular)
  • 1954 – Hungary (quarter-finals)
  • 1966 – Portugal (group stage)
  • 1974 – Netherlands (second group stage)
  • 1978 – Despite being undefeated, Brazil did not qualify for the final
  • 1982 – Italy (second group stage)
  • 1986 – France (quarter-finals)
  • 1990 – Argentina (round of 16)
  • 1998 – France (final)
  • 2006 – France (quarter-finals)
  • 2010 – Netherlands (quarter-finals)
  • 2014 – Germany (semi-final)
  • 2018 – Belgium (quarter-finals)
  • 2022 – Croatia (quarter-finals)

The Brazilian team has never lost to an Asian team in the World Cups. There were four clashes, only one in the knockout stage:

Clashes with Asians in the World Cups

2002 – Brazil 4×0 China (group stage)
2006 – Brazil 4×1 Japan (group stage)
2010 – Brazil 2×1 North Korea (group stage)
2022 – Brazil 4×1 South Korea (round of 16)

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will repeat, for the first time, a squad in the World Cup and will field the players who started playing against Scotland. Whoever wins today’s match will face the winner of the duel between Norway and Ivory Coast, this Tuesday, in Dallas.

Brazil opens the second day of the round of 32 stage:

  • 2pm – Brazil x Japan – Houston (United States)
  • 5:30 pm – Germany x Paraguay – Boston (United States)
  • 10pm – Netherlands x Morocco – Monterrey (Mexico)

This Sunday, Canada and South Africa mishandled the ball and played one of the worst games of the World Cup. The hosts won 1-0, thanks to a goal from Stephen Eustáquio, who found the net in the 46th minute of the final stage. The opponent in the next phase will be the winner of the duel between the Netherlands and Morocco.
