From the 1st of July, the Arrivals Area at Faro International Airport will be transformed into a showcase for Algarve Citrus Fruits with Protected Geographical Indication, in an initiative promoted by AlgarOrange – Algarve Citrus Fruit Operators Association.
The action takes place between the 1st and 3rd of July, with the offer of oranges to passengers, and continues until the 7th of July through promotional panels and billboards near Faro Airport.
Under the motto “Let the Sun in: Welcome to the land of citrus fruits”, the initiative aims to promote Citrus do Algarve PGI among national and international tourists, presenting one of the region’s most emblematic products upon arrival in the Algarve.
Action aims to reinforce recognition of Algarve citrus fruits
According to AlgarOrange, the objective is to create a first experience with the product, capable of influencing its consumption, recognition and demand in the visitors’ markets of origin.
The official start of the initiative is scheduled for July 1st, at 11am, in the Arrivals Zone of Faro Airport, in a symbolic ceremony that will feature representatives from AlgarOrange, CCDR Algarve, Algarve Tourism Region and NERA.
The presences of José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve, Fernando Severino, vice-president of CCDR Algarve responsible for the Agriculture and Fisheries area, André Gomes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, and Vítor Neto, president of NERA, are expected.
AlgarOrange emphasizes that Citrus fruits from the Algarve PGI are “bathed in the sun 365 days a year” and ripen “at the right time, on the tree, without rushing”, characteristics that the association intends to make known to visitors.
Product stands out for its origin and quality
Citrus fruits from the Algarve PGI are produced in a delimited geographical area of the region and are distinguished by their thin, colorful and shiny skin, their high juice content and their sweet flavor, with a balance between sweetness and acidity.
The Protected Geographical Indication is a European Union designation that values the relationship between geographic origin and the quality, reputation or specific characteristics of a product.
The initiative is part of the project Internacionalizar + Algarve 3.0 – Promotion of International Recognition of the Algarve Region, which foresees, until December 2026, several promotional actions in the areas of agri-food, tourism, technology, health and sea.
The project is developed in co-promotion by AlgarOrange, NERA – Business Association of the Algarve Region, Algarve Tourism Association, Algarve Wine Commission, Algarve Tourism Region and University of Algarve, with co-financing from the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program, Portugal 2030 and the European Union.
