Several are arrested during celebration of Morocco’s World Cup victory

over the Netherlands in the penalty shootout in the second phase of the World Cup sparked scenes of joy in the early hours of Tuesday (30) in The Hague, home to a large Moroccan community, but also arrests following clashes with police.

In the Schilderswijk neighborhood, fans wrapped in Moroccan flags they danced and celebrated in the streets, with horns and fireworks. Hundreds of fans gathered at an intersection in the neighborhood to celebrate as the vehicles passed by.

Almost an hour after the celebrations began, the atmosphere became tense with the arrival of riot police at the scene. The agents used water cannons and advanced with batons to disperse the crowd. Police officers pinned several youths to the ground after they attacked their legs with batons, and AFP reporters witnessed several arrests.

The police took the handcuffed people to the police cars, while officers on bicycles chased young people through the streetsbut no significant damage was recorded. Despite several attempts, people refused to speak to the press. Many wore masks.

The exciting match, played in Monterrey, Mexico, ended 1-1, after regulation time and extra time. On penalties, the Moroccans won 3-2. The last kick was converted by striker Ismael Saibari, who plays for PSV Eindhoven. Now, in the round of 16, Morocco will face Canada.
