An extensive fire near Thessaloniki claimed the first victims and an injured person. Firefighters evacuated the threatened village of Lete, the situation was complicated by strong wind and drought.

As a result of a large forest fire near the Greek city of Thessaloniki, one man died and one woman was injured on Tuesday, local firefighters reported. The AFP agency drew attention to it, writes TASR.

Flames stretching for five kilometers threatened the village of Lete, which lies approximately 15 kilometers north of Thessaloniki. Firefighters confirmed that residents were urgently urged to leave the area. The flames were fanned by a strong wind, and in addition to the ground units, firefighters also deployed five planes and two helicopters, which dropped water on them.

In recent days, other forest fires have broken out in Greece, reports AFP. The country struggles with them every year, due to regular periods of drought and heat waves.
