Chancellor Scholz is expected to address the lower house of the German parliament – the Bundestag – on Wednesday.
As expected, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is not expected to call a vote of confidence in the government on Wednesday, the spokesman for the cabinet in Berlin, Steffen Hebestreit, confirmed on Monday. “I can assure you that the chancellor will not call a vote of confidence on Wednesday,” Hebestreit told reporters. TASR reports according to the DPA agency.
Scholz himself is under great political pressure from the local opposition to call a vote of confidence in the government immediately after the collapse of the government coalition last week, and not until January, as originally announced, reminds DPA.
Such a vote would likely result in early elections, as the chancellor is currently without a majority in the Bundestag following the collapse of his three-way coalition.
Although Scholz indicated in an interview on Sunday that he could call such a vote before Christmas this year, according to Hebestreit he will only decide on a date if he is unable to reach an agreement with the opposition Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) on the adoption of several critical bills yet before calling new elections.
