Iberian lynx visits schools in Alcoutim and will “read” a letter

The Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) will take the Iberian lynx to the Alcoutim School Group, to read a letter to students on November 13th, at the Integrated Basic School of Martim Longo (11:00) and at Escola Básica de Alcoutim (14:15).

“In this awareness-raising action, the Iberian lynx, played by a puppet, ‘writes’ a letter to the population, where he talks about the difficulties he faces in his daily life, thus seeking to raise awareness of this species classified as ‘Vulnerable ‘ in the Iberian Peninsula, according to the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)”, says the ICNF in a statement.

The show was conceived and produced by Picada Cultural – Association for the promotion of cultural, artistic and social values, and features text and voice by Jeannine Trévidic and puppet manipulation by José Gil. The construction of the puppet was done by Sofia Vinagre.

This awareness-raising action is financed by the LIFE Lynxconnect project, a cross-border project that has several Portuguese and Spanish partners and whose main objective is to continue the recovery process of the Iberian lynx, which was already extinct in Portugal and very threatened in Spain.

According to the latest report, the species surpassed the barrier of 2,000 specimens in 2023, with 1,730 specimens in Spain and 291 in Portugal.
