The trial of the former president’s appeal, convicted of passive corruption and money laundering, is scheduled for this Wednesday, the 13th. The president of the , minister Luís Roberto Barroso, announced the date after a previous trial in the virtual plenary, which resulted in a partial score of 6 to 2 against Collor’s defense. The defense strategy aims to reduce the sentence, which could avoid the former president’s arrest. The case rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, together with five other ministers, voted against the appeal. On the other hand, Gilmar Mendes and Dias Toffoli were in favor of reducing the sentence. The move of the trial to the physical plenary of the Supreme Court requires the ministers to reevaluate their votes, thus restarting the analysis of the case.

In May 2023, Collor was sentenced to eight years and ten months in prison. The defense argues that, if the sentence is reduced to four years, this could result in the crime of passive corruption being prescribed. In this scenario, Collor would only serve a sentence of four years and six months for money laundering, which could also change the regime for serving the sentence, going from closed to semi-open. The accusations against Collor were formalized by the Attorney General’s Office in August 2015, in the context of Operation Lava Jato. He is accused of having received bribes from a corruption scheme linked to BR Distribuidora.
