Fires, attacks on police officers and fireworks directed at people were reported; the case comes after tension between Jews and Muslims

A Police in Amsterdam (Netherlands) reported through X (formerly Twitter) that they had made arrests after reports of fires, attacks on police officers and fireworks directed at people this Monday (11.Nov.2024). The number of detainees was not mentioned.

The authorities are responsible for the acts, classifying them only as a “group of people”. The police are keeping the case under investigation.

The Dutch capital is experiencing tension after between Jews and Muslims the previous week. At the time, 62 people were detained and 30 were injured. The episode took place in the context of the Dutch team Ajax’s game against Maccabi Tel Aviv, from Israel.

The Israeli government sent 2 planes to repatriate Maccabi Tel Aviv fans present in the city.

After the riots, Amsterdam City Hall banned demonstrations from taking place in the country’s capital for 3 days. The city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, applied the measure due to “anti-Semitic squads” who were in the city, according to her.

However, the ban was violated by some groups. On Sunday night (Nov. 10), more than 50 people were and hundreds more were dispersed from a square by police. The demonstrators were protesting in favor of the Palestinian cause.
