Syrian rebels opposing the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claim to have entered the capital Damascus
The President of the United States, Joe Biden (Democratic Party), is monitoring the events “extraordinary” in Syria, said Sean Savett, spokesman for the National Security Council, in the early hours of this Sunday (Dec 8, 2024). Syrian rebels opposing the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said they were in the capital Damascus.
The Syrian Army command informed the government that the al-Assad regime “he finished”. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali has said he is willing to hand over power to a transitional government.
On X (formerly Twitter), Savett wrote that Biden and his team were in “constant contact” with partners in the Middle East.
US President-elect Donald Trump (Republican Party) announced on Saturday (Dec 7) that the country will stay out of the war in Syria. He declared that the country is a “mess”, but which is not a friendly nation to Washington: “This is not our fight, let it go, don’t get involved”.
In his profile on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the war in Ukraine has left Russia unable to stop the rebels opposing Bashar al-Assad’s regime and that the possible fall of the Syrian president will be “best thing” for the country.
In a new report, made this Sunday (Dec 8), Trump declared that Russia “I was no longer interested” in protecting al-Assad. “Firstly, there was no reason for Russia to be there. She lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine“, he wrote. The Republican stated that it is time for Russian President Vladimir Putin (United Russia, center) to act.
“There must be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations must begin. Many lives are being needlessly wasted, many families destroyed, and if [as guerras] continue, they could turn into something much bigger and much worse. I know Vladimir well. This is the time to act. China can help. The world is waiting!”disse Trump.

Data from , which monitors flights, indicates that an Ilyushin Il-76 model plane took off from the Syrian capital at around 11pm on Saturday, December 7th Brasília time. The route is irregular (see the image below). The aircraft disappeared from the Flight Radar system at 11:40 pm (Brasília time).

TOWLING OF STATUE IN HOMS
Video circulating on social media this Sunday (Dec 8) shows Syrians tearing down a statue of Hafez al-Assad (1930-2000), Bashar’s father, in Homs after rebels took control of the city, considered strategic for the 2 sides, rebels and government.
Watch the video (19sec):
A profoundly symbolic moment for Syria: the toppling of Assad’s statue in Homs after the rebels took control, facing little resistance. Homs is regarded as the capital of the Syrian revolution that began in 2011 & suffered one of the most brutal crackdowns
