The 5 Star Movement buries its founder, the comedian Beppe Grillo, with a telematic consultation

The burial of Beppe Grillo is now a fact. This has been decided by the formation itself that was founded by him in 2007, the 5 Star Movement (M5S), through a second telematic vote of those registered on the group’s portal (about 90,000), after a previous consultation was invalidated due to an appeal presented by the comedian himself. The exuberant Italian artist and politician, who recently even claimed that he had created a new religion, thus loses his role as “guarantor”, a kind of supervisory position created for this for him, and for which he received around 300,000 euros a year.

“Now we turn the page. We will continue forward with strength, with our eyes set on the future. We will reestablish ourselves,” he declared. Giuseppe Contecurrent leader of the M5S and former Italian prime minister, visibly satisfied, after it was reported that 64% of the militants had voted and 80% had supported defenestrating Grillo. “The schism? It doesn’t make sense,” he added. “He is a traitor,” he had said of him Grillo76 years old, but considered for years the main scourge of the controversial Silvio Berlusconi and who in 2013 managed to turn the M5S into the most voted party in your country.

Se thus closes a cycle in the political history of Italy. A tragicomic epilogue After months of arguments between the old and new guard of the M5S, currently represented by Conte, a figure of ambiguous ideology (today closer to the radical left, but in the past even an ally of the extreme right of Matteo Salvini, leader of the League). Today he leads the formation to which the Democratic Party (PD), the main center-left formation in Italy, still must resort today to agree alliances and thus govern in many local administrations. And all this at a dark time for the M5S, when the party continues to lose votes (it currently barely exceeds 11% of the consensus, according to various polls).

However, the internal guerrilla. As shown by the words of former minister Danilo Toninelli, one of the faces of the M5S in recent years, today distanced from Conte, and who, after knowing the result of the consultation, has urged Grillo to rebel. “We hope that Beppe initiates some action to recover the symbol [del M5S]which is 100% owned. Conte appropriated it by force, through a private document,” Toninelli declared, after knowing the result of the consultation.
