US police have detained a man involved in the shooting of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson, who was killed last week. The detainee had written a “manifesto” in which he criticized health care companies for putting profits before health care, the New York Times reports, citing a senior police official.
Brian Thompson, 50, was at around 6:45 am (local time) on Wednesday in front of a Hilton hotel in Manhattan, New York. He was then transferred to Mount Sinai West Hospital in serious condition, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police immediately began the hunt for the shooter, who fled on a bicycle toward Sixth Avenue shortly after the attack. According to witness reports, the suspect was wearing a cream coat, a black face mask and a gray backpack.
The attack took place moments before the investor conference, organized by UnitedHealthCare – one of the largest health insurers in the USA – which ended ahead of schedule, due to the events, he revealed to Reuters at the time.
