Caiado denies abuse of power and says he will appeal the decision

Governor of GO cited cases of other politicians, such as Dilma and Bolsonaro, who also held meetings with allies during the electoral period and were not penalized

The governor of Goiás, (União Brasil), stated this Wednesday (11.dec.2024) “Never” having committed any illegal moral or electoral act. The statement was made after the TRE-GO (Regional Electoral Court of Goiás) for abuse of political power.

In an interview with journalists, Caiado stated that will appeal of the decision, which can be appealed. “I have always guided my political life in compliance with legal norms and have never committed a moral or electoral offense that could discredit my life path”said the governor.

In addition to the governor of Goiás, the court also determined the ineligibility for 8 years and the revocation of the registration of the from Goiânia, (União Brasil), and the elected vice-mayor, (Forward).

The Electoral Court understood that Caiado had favored Mabel and Cláudia Lira, candidates who had his support, during this year’s municipal election by promoting dinners at Palácio das Esmeraldas, the seat of government.

According to Caiado, the dinners had no electoral purpose. He also stated that other politicians promoted similar meetings during election periods and were not legally penalized for it.

He cited a meeting of the former president with allies in 2014 and an event that former president (PL) held in 2022, at Palácio da Alvorada.

“Many friends sent me a case about President Dilma Rousseff, who met at the Palácio do Alvorada [em 2014] […] In 2022, I supported Bolsonaro in the 2nd round and went to Palácio do Alvorada with 80 other mayors. In 2024, Lula asked for votes for Boulos inside the Palácio do Alvorada. We can’t have double standards, I live here. We can’t have 2 treatments”, said the governor.

The TRE-GO decision was handed down by judge Maria Umbelina Zorzetti and can still be appealed. Therefore, as there is no immediate execution, Caiado will continue in office for now and Mabel can be sworn in.
