Can Richarlison play for Fluminense?

With the aim of strengthening the team for the 2025 World Cup, Fluminense is looking to sign Richarlison, a Tottenham player. Fluminense believes that the player’s return would be an important addition to the team, raising the level of the squad and becoming one of the team’s main figures in the competition.

The Rio club has already started negotiations with the striker and is willing to make a financial effort to complete his return.

In June of this year, when Thiago Silva returned, Mário Bittencourt, president of Fluminense, even commented on the matter at the time.

– If all this conspires, plus the gods of football, the great tricolors who are with us from the soul, if everything helps, they would have two players who would be a dream. Our Pigeon, Richarlison, if he wants, the doors are open. And another one who didn’t play here, but who I admire as a player, who is a player that everyone would like to have, is Neymar. If one day we have the conditions, who knows… Richarlison played here and knows what wonders the fans can do – he said at the time.

How was Richarlison’s time at Fluminense?

Richarlison played for Fluminense for two seasons, between 2016 and 2017, scoring 19 goals in 67 matches for the Laranjeiras club.

In 2017, Fluminense traded Richarlison to Watford, from England, for 12.5 million euros (approximately R$46 million). Before that, the striker was acquired for R$10 million from América-MG.

Richarlison and Palmeiras

Palmeiras’ interest in Richarlison is nothing new. In 2017, before moving on to English football, the player negotiated with the São Paulo club and was left out of a duel between Fluminense and Palmeiras, indicating a negotiation.

In July, Fluminense closed the sale of the striker to Watford, for 12.5 million euros (equivalent to R$46 million, at the price at the time). In addition to the English club and Palmeiras, Ajax, from the Netherlands, expressed interest in the Brazilian.

Will Tottenham release Richarlison?

After a goalscoring season in 2023/24, Richarlison suffered a series of injuries that impacted his performance in the current season – just seven games, one goal and one assist. He has a contract with the club until June 2027.

– With Richarlison, it’s been frustrating because I see potential in him and, to be fair, when he’s on form he always makes an impact, at least for me. I remember the beginning of last year, and when he returned to the team during the year, he scored a run of goals – commented Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on December 4th.

Therefore, the Brazilian’s future in the English team is undefined. In the same interview, Postecoglou argued that the team will need to reinforce the attacking sector.

– Even in the small games he played this year, he made an impact. So that’s what you stick to, but there’s no doubt we need some reinforcement in that front third over the next few transfer windows.
