Aircraft crashed into a wall at Muan airport and exploded; 177 deaths were confirmed and 2 crew survived
Images circulating on social media show the moment the Jeju Airlines plane lands at Muan airport and as soon as it hits a wall, this Sunday (Dec 29, 2024), Saturday morning (Dec 28) in Brazil. To date, 177 deaths have been confirmed and 2 people.
In the video, it is possible to see that the plane, a Boeing 737-800, lands with the landing gear retracted and straight on its belly on the runway. The aircraft is unable to reduce speed, slides until it hits a wall that was already outside the landing strip and then explodes.

The Jeju Air flight left Bangkok, in , carrying 181 people, including 6 crew members, according to the South Korean news agency . So far, as reported by the news agency 177 deaths were confirmed. South Korean authorities, however, believe that all passengers, except the 2 crew members who were rescued and taken to hospitals in the city of Mokpo, died in the accident.
The two survivors, as said by , are not at risk of death.
According to the South Korean agency, the majority of passengers were from South Korea, with the exception of 2 Thais.
Authorities suspect that a failure in the landing gear, caused by a bird that crashed into the aircraft, may have resulted in the accident. An investigation is conducted at the scene to ascertain the exact cause. Rescue operations are also ongoing.
On its Instagram profile, the airline Jeju Air declared that it will “every effort to resolve” what happened and apologized.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed regret over the accident. On his profile on X, he expressed condolences and declared that the country would offer assistance.
