Washington blames China for a cyber attack on the Treasury Department.
China on Tuesday responded to Washington’s accusation that a Chinese state-backed actor was behind a cyber attack on the US Treasury Department. She called it an “unsubstantiated” claim, TASR reports, according to an AFP report.
“We have stated our position on such baseless accusations for which there is no evidence many times in the past,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.
“(Beijing) has always objected to all kinds of hacking attacks, and we object even more to the spread of false information aimed at China for political reasons,” she added.
The incident took place earlier this month. The attacker compromised BeyondTrust, a company providing IT security services to the US Treasury Department. He was able to gain remote access to some of the ministry’s computers and unclassified documents, the Treasury press office said. The source of the accusation was a letter from the Ministry of Finance addressed to the Banking Committee of the Senate.
