At least 10 people died and 30 were injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, according to authorities in the American city.
The incident occurred at 3:15 am local time, 5:15 am Brasilia time, at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets during New Year’s celebrations, which usually draw large crowds to the traditional French Quarter neighborhood.
Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, said a man in a pickup truck intentionally drove at a high rate of speed into a crowd and then opened fire while trying to exit the vehicle, striking two officers.
“He was determined to cause the carnage and damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick said.
Investigators found what appeared to be improvised explosive devices at the crash site, but were now trying to determine whether those devices were working, said Alethea Duncan, an FBI assistant special agent in New Orleans.
Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, said on social media that a “horrific act of violence occurred on Bourbon Street earlier this morning.” He asked for prayers for the victims and emergency workers who responded to the scene and told people to stay away from the area of the crime.
