Ryanair will sue passengers who disrupt flights and seek compensation worth thousands of euros

“It is unacceptable that passengers suffer unnecessary disruption as a result of undisciplined passenger behavior,” says the company, which is asking for 15,000 euros for a diversion to Porto.

Ryanair announced this Wednesday that it will prosecute passengers who cause disturbances on flights and that it has already asked compensation of 15,000 euros to a passenger who forced a flight to Lanzarote to divert to Porto.

In a statement, the airline said it had filed proceedings in an Irish court “claiming over €15,000 in compensation against a passenger who disrupted flight FR7124 from Dublin to Lanzarote on 9 April”.

According to the carrier, that passenger’s behavior forced the flight to be diverted to Porto, where it was delayed overnight, causing 160 passengers to face unnecessary disturbances and costing the company 15,000 euros in accommodation, passenger expenses and landing costs.

Ryanair said it hoped that the decision to proceed with civil proceedings would have a deterrent effect and highlighted that “it has a strict zero tolerance policy” regarding passenger misconduct and that “it will continue to take decisive action to combat undisciplined passenger behavior on aircraft”.

“It is unacceptable that passengers – many of whom are traveling with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday – suffer unnecessary disruption and a reduction in holiday time as a result of unruly passenger behavior,” an airline spokesperson pointed out, mentioned in the same note.
