Rio de Janeiro’s security forces carried out, this Wednesday (15), a new phase of Operation Tourniquete in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the north of the city. The action aims to dismantle the financial core of Comando Vermelho, including operators of a scheme that handled more than R$21 million in illicit transactions. To date, seven suspects have been arrested, including family members of drug leaders. The police are trying to execute 14 arrest warrants, issued by the 1st Specialized Criminal Court of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice. Among the targets is Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as Doca, identified as leader of the criminal group.

Doca is accused of commanding territorial invasion operations and ordering executions related to drug trafficking. Investigations revealed a sophisticated money laundering scheme, with nearly 5,000 financial transactions identified. The resources obtained are used to finance armaments, bribes and the territorial expansion of the Red Command.

The operation resulted in intense shootouts, with seven people shot, including a Bope military police officer, who was rescued and is in stable condition. To hinder the police advance, drug traffickers erected barricades, spread oil on the streets and improvised blockades with train tracks. An armored police vehicle faced difficulties on a slope due to oil, colliding with three cars and a motorcycle.

Due to the clashes, important roads in the region, such as Estrada do Itararé and Avenida Itaóca, were blocked. In addition, family clinics suspended services and six bus routes had their routes diverted. Residents reported home invasions and cell phone checks without a court order. The Public Security Secretariat is investigating a possible leak of information about the operation, as intercepted messages indicated preparations to hinder police action.

The operation, which included the participation of the Civil Police, the Military Police and the Public Ministry, was carried out in several locations in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to actions in the States of Bahia and Paraíba. Police from 12 battalions surrounded strategic areas, such as the communities of Grota and Fazendinha. Security forces claim that the operation is essential to weaken the financing of criminal activities in the state and guarantee greater security for the population.
