Elon Musk, the head of the advisory body responsible for increasing the efficiency of the US government (Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE), questioned the ambitious project to develop artificial intelligence (AI) supported by President Donald Trump. TASR informs about it based on the reports of AP and DPA agencies.
Trump announced on Tuesday (January 21) that Stargate will invest $500 billion (€478.79 billion) in the US to develop AI and create 100,000 jobs. Among others, OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle will participate in the project. Musk questioned the amount of the investment. “They don’t really have money,” a close Trump ally wrote on the X social network he owns. Japan’s Softbank has “well under $10 billion” secured, the tech billionaire added, citing well-informed sources.
Sam Altman, head of OpenAIwhich created the well-known software tool for automated communication ChatGPT, rejected these claims and invited Musk to visit the construction site of the first data center. “I understand that what is great for the country is not always optimal for your companies. However, I hope that in your new role you will mostly put the US first.” stated on Wednesday (January 22) Altman.
Musk and Altman got into a heated conflict. Musk was once one of the founders of OpenAI, but then withdrew from it. He subsequently went to court asking the court to stop OpenAI’s transformation into a for-profit company. Altman, in turn, accused Musk of trying to take control of OpenAI while he was at it. Meanwhile, Musk founded a rival company, xAI, which focuses on the development of artificial intelligence.
