Quito (Reuters) – Ecuador and Canada ended a new trade agreement after months of negotiations, said Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on social media on Sunday.
The government of Noboa expects the trade agreement to promote local employment growth in sectors such as flowers, canned tuna, textiles and auto parts, among others, said Ecuador’s statement.
Noboa’s statement noted that the agreement involves commitments from both countries regarding labor and environmental policies.
Commercial negotiations began last March and extended to six rounds of negotiations.
Ecuador voters go to the polls on February 9 for a first -round general election, in which the conservative noboa competes to remain in office. A second round of voting is scheduled for April if necessary.
