On Wednesday, MEPs adopted a resolution calling on the European Union and its Member States to increase aid for Ukraine. They also ask for speeding up the course of accession negotiations on its accession to the EU. 442 deputies voted in favor, 98 were against and 126 delayed, TASR informs.

According to MEPs, the EU is currently the main strategic ally of Ukraine and must help it enforce the right to self -defense.

Welcomed the US proposal

MEPs welcomed the proposal of the United States for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, which was reached on March 11. They expect Russia to agree with it and stop all attacks on the Ukrainian civilian population, infrastructure and territory.

“In order to discourage Russia from another aggression, the EU must contribute to strong security guarantees for Ukraine. The country must be able to reject hasty agreements that weaken its safety in the medium and long term and lead to the risk of renewed Russian aggression also against other European countries in the future, “the European Parliament (EP) resolution.

According to the EU, no negotiations on European security can be held without the EU presence, and MEPs welcome to the establishment of a “coalition of willing” to enforce a possible peace agreement under the leadership of Europe.

MEPs stressed that the future of Ukraine is EU membership and calls on to speed up access negotiations. They are urged to prepare for post -war reconstruction with new funds. At the same time, they emphasize that Russia has to pay for the huge damage caused by Ukraine. “Russian sovereign assets immobilized within EU sanctions must be confiscated and used to defend and recover Ukraine,” the press release says.

Parliament also calls for more effective sanctions against Russia, along with restrictive measures against any entity that facilitates the circumvention of sanctions and provides the Russian military complex of military technology and double use technologies.
