Chimpanzees, octopuses or… bacteria. Each with its context would control the planet in a scenario that (we hope) do not happen.
Human beings dominate planet Earth. Although this domain is a “crumb” in the midst of the history of our planet.
We seem invincible, but we are not. Whether due to climate change, nuclear war or other global catastrophe, our extinction is a possibility. We don’t want it, but it can happen.
Os humans disappear. It is a mass extinction. “So?” Asks António Costa. Life on Earth continues – as it continued in other mass extinctions.
If humans disappeared, What species would dominate the planet? The portal leaves the 5 largest candidates.
1. Chimpanzees
Our closest relatives are natural competitors: they share 98.7% of our DNA and know how to use tools, a key factor in human success. They use branches to extract insects, rocks to leave nuts and even sharpen sticks to hunt. Have complex social structures. And can occupy urban spaces and even use human technology.
2. Powders
Although they are aquatic, they are among the smartest creatures on Earth. With multiple hearts, highly developed brains and notable troubleshooting capabilities, they also know how to use tools such as using shelter shells and jellyfish tentacles such as weapons.

One of the most resilient species on Earth, with an estimated population of 20 thousand billion of ants. Some have already survived radiation exposure-they must adapt in a post-apocalyptic world. They operate in highly organized colonies, with complex social structures, some overcome human civilization in coordination.
4. RATS
The rats have already spread to almost all terrestrial masses, thriving in various environments. They reproduce rapidly and demonstrate notable survival instincts. Without humans around, the rats could get bigger. Thanks to its adaptability and ability to overcome native wildlife, they could emerge as the dominant land species.
5. Bacteria
This may surprise. Or disappoint. But beware: Bacteria are probably the most likely candidates to master the planet in the long run. Microorganisms are more than all other life forms and thrive in extreme environments. Bacteria may be the last survivors. They would only disappear when the earth became totally uninhabitable.
