The vice president expressed his disapproval of the new 25% tax on steel and aluminum imposed by, considering this decision as “wrong”. He emphasized the importance of dialogue as a viable alternative to resolve the issue. Alckmin noted that this measure was not specifically directed to Brazil, which, according to him, does not represent a commercial challenge for the US, which have a surplus in their business relations with the country. A technical meeting between representatives from Brazil and the United States is scheduled to take place, although there is no expectations that immediate results are achieved. The meeting will be held at Itamaraty and will be attended by second -ranking employees, without the presence of ministers. The Brazilian government expressed its dissatisfaction with Trump’s decision and reaffirmed its commitment to protect national interests in the World Trade Organization.

Alckmin reiterated that the dialogue approach is preferable to any form of retaliation. He pointed out that the measure adopted by former President Trump was comprehensive and was not limited to Brazilian products, reinforcing that Brazil is not a problem in the commercial dynamics of the United States. The technical meeting is expected to make room for broader discussions on the subject. The new tax will have a “significant impact” on Brazilian steel and aluminum exports to the United States, which by 2024 totaled about $ 3.2 billion. The Brazilian government is evaluating possible actions in the WTO to safeguard its interests and mitigate the effects of this measure.
