The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, arrived in Rome this Saturday accompanied by his wife, Olena Zelenska, to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, who died this week at age 88, according to Zelenski spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov, to the Ukrainian news public agency, Ukrinform.
Ukrainian media published this week, citing sources from the Ukrainian presidency, which Zelenski is open to meet with the US president Donald Trump, during his trip to Rome for Francisco’s burial.
Ukraine and the US maintain intense contacts in the framework of the Washington initiative to end the Russian-Ukrainian war with a negotiated agreement.
Zelenski, his wife and the rest of the delegation that has landed today in Rome will join the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrí Sibiga, who was already in the Italian capital and yesterday honored Francisco’s memory in the Basilica of San Pedro.
Sibiga met in the Vatican with the only Ukrainian cardinal who will participate in the conclave, Mikola Bugok.
