I visited the Ustroń spa in early spring, but I would like to come back here in the summer, autumn and winter. It is located in such a place that nature around can delight at any time of the year. Yes, I am already at this age that I appreciate the proximity and beauty of nature, but until recently it seemed to me that I was far too young for a stay in the sanatorium. How was it wrong. Ustroń spa turned out to be a real SPA for the soul and body. A spacious, glazed apartment with a view of the Beskids, relaxing massages and professional health -repairing treatments, brine pool, wrestling (with a view of the mountains), a graduation tower, water pump room, proximity to tourist trails and amazing architecture make you can relax and recharge yourself with positive energy for a long time.
Ustroń spa. Pyramids and architectural equator of the pearl of modernism
Ustroń Uzdrowisko is a place – an institution. Designed with a flourish, but humanly. Because it has just been created for people. The idea of construction on the slope of the equator of the great spa complex was created together with the post -war development of Upper Silesia. Thousands of mine employees needed a spa. Ustroń was an excellent location, there have long been operated there on mud baths. But it was in the times of the Polish People’s Republic that the city developed in a spectacular way.
Who designed the Ustroń spa?
The task of designing a spa in Ustroński Zawodzie was assigned to the architects known in Upper Silesia: Henryk Buszka, Aleksander Franci and Tadeusz Szewczyk. The first two were already known from other projects in the region: the Millennium housing estate in Katowice (with famous skyscrapers, commonly known as “corn”), or the theater in Rybnik, are just one of their works. Sanatorium architecture was also not foreign to them. However, the most famous implementation of the group is the Healing and Rehabilitation District Ustroń Przygoda in Ustroń. Designed as a complex of buildings on the slope of Mount Równica. The main building of the sanatorium is a monumental, oblong, modernist facility. It was designed for eight hundred people. It houses the accommodation, reception part and the main hall leading to a large dining room. Despite the size, however, it does not overwhelm, its body based on reinforced concrete supports seems to flow – the association with the ship is not accidental here. In addition, a lot of glazing and the rhythm determined by balconies and facade elements. The powerful building of the “Równica” sanatorium does not attract excessively, but rather directs the eye to what you can see next.
The pyramids have not gained their name. Their triangular shape can be associated this way, although the creators’ idea was slightly different. One of the architects, Aleksander Frant, said in the film “Uzdrowisko. Architecture Zawodzie” that the buildings were to resemble stones thrown to the slope. But not in a random form. It should be characteristic, match the mountains, complement their landscape. Franta emphasized that the sanatorium had to be made of prefabricated, mainly rectangular elements, so that its performance was easy and economical. The cubic block was cut at a slant. Hence the shape of a triangle recognizable in the form of the Pyramids in Stroń. According to French, the level of French reflects the water surface. Slant – mountain slopes, and the vertical – tree trunks. The landscape is built in these three directions – said the late French in 2019. And it’s hard not to agree with him. The pyramid was to be built almost 30, but 17 was built. Work on the sanatorium complex was extended to decades, with time the work was interrupted, some buildings changed the owners, some began to decline, calling for renovation. The consistent modernization was four pyramids, which together with the main building “Równica” form a spa Ustroń. Anyway, the “Equity” also underwent a thorough renovation. The renovated facade allows you to admire the iconic design in full splendor. But not only about the experience of architecture lovers.
Ustroń spa privately and on the National Health Fund
You went to Ustroń – and he still goes – for health. The spa traditions date back to the 12th century. The sanatorium can be used as part of the NFZ benefits, but also in private. A mild climate, beautiful mountains and a buzzing Vistula. In addition, highly mineralized waters and mud decks. All this meant that medicinal and recreation centers were created in Ustroń. In the spa Ustroń, guests have at their disposal doctors, physiotherapists, rehabilitators and a full spectrum of treatments. They can be an element of treatment, therapy or simply a healthy lifestyle for those who like to take care of themselves. The main treatment base is the Spa Institute of Health. It is located in a separate pavilion, to which a glazed connector leads from the main building. Regardless of the weather, you can admire the beautiful forest in which the spa complex is located. Up to 6,000 treatments per day are carried out at the Health Institute. Balneotherapy helps with joints, rheumatism, back pain, diabetes and skin ailments. Hydrotherapy treatments bring healing effects. Various baths will also help healthy people – they increase immunity and perfectly reduce stress, and help athletes in regeneration after exercise. Patients are also dealt with by physiotherapy specialists – thanks to their knowledge, appropriate exercises and treatments help reduce pain, regain or maintain fitness. Masseurs will also help the sick and healthy – they perform medicinal and relaxation massages. Relaxation is dedicated to a separate Medical & SPA zone – in the first one you can take care of health and form thanks to mud, acidbular or ozone baths. The latter, however, helps to relax in the warmth of the saunas, the aroma of massage oils. From the windows of treatment rooms, exercise rooms, gyms and even brine pools you can see the forest and mountains surrounding the spa. Nature is literally at your fingertips. Interestingly, the healing brine and mud used in the spa come from its own deposits. The well of brine water can be seen while walking between the pyramids, just like the water pump room and the graduation tower, where you can breathe at will with saturated salt mist. Both local mud and brine are also used for the production of “Pelo” cosmetics lines. This is the spa’s own brand. Natural creams, masks or shower gels smell nice, do not overwhelm and give the feeling of skin soothing.

From the rich palette of treatments offered by the Medical & SPA zone, I chose a relaxing massage with hot oils. However, it quickly turned out that in addition to having a nice stroking, a slightly stronger medicinal massage would be better for me. When I felt warm, a delicate smell of oil and touch of the therapist’s hand on the skin, I immediately thought – oh wounds, but I’m tense. Not only did I think, but I also said. Anyway, the therapist sensed it herself. After a moment of conversation, the form of the massage changed slightly – I finally felt relaxed, and at the same time the pain in the spine also disappeared. If I were to indicate the largest plus of the SPA zone, which Ustroń’s spa stands out from the background of a regular biological renewal point, it is a professional, educated and experienced staff.
Ustrowisko Ustroń attractions not only in the sanatorium
There is also a library, a patient club (dance games are held, it is amazing how much energy can get some guests!), The tavern Zapiecek (here also there is no shortage of musical attractions). Various types of workshops and trips are also conducted. The calendar of events for a given month is hung in the lobby, right next to the position of the animator. The area around Ustroń also attracts the ideal routes to hiking. Walk, march and run throughout the whole slope of the equator. From the area around its peak you can admire the spectacular sunsets (you can enter there by car, driving impressions with a winding route will be remembered for a long time). But Ustroń and its surroundings have much more to offer. The Vistula flows in the valley. It is not a majestic and slow river here yet. In Ustroń, Wisła flows rapidly, and green boulevards stretch on both banks. They also attract mountains. We will enter the nearby chantoria with a year -round chair lift, and taking the opportunity, you can visit Czech neighbors at the top. Fried cheese and other specialties in the Czech mountain inn? From the top station of the lift it is only half an hour of walking (you do not need to have crowns, they also take our currency). Along the way, we will also pass the observation tower, from which you can clearly see a large part of the Silesian Beskids, Ustroń, nearby Wisła and a town on the Czech side of the border. From the peak of Czantoria, the spa pyramids look like architects: like pebbles thrown on a mountain slope.
