Military dies during operation to recover bodies of divers in Maldives

Mohamed Mahudhee, a sergeant who participated in the rescue of the bodies of the five Italian divers in the Maldives, died after completing the operation, said the Maldivian Foreign Minister, Thoriq Ibrahim. According to a statement shared on social media, Mahudhee lost his life during the rescue operation at Vaavu Atoll. “Your bravery and sacrifice will always be honored. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and colleagues,” said Ibrahim.

Rescue of the five Italians

According to the local press, the five Italians entered the water on Thursday morning (14). The crew of the diving vessel they were traveling on reported them missing after the group failed to return to the surface.

The Maldivian Armed Forces reported that a body was found in a cave about 60 meters deep, and the other four divers are also believed to be at the scene.

Four of the divers were part of a team from the University of Genoa, including ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter and two researchers.

Later, the university identified the victims such as Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal — who was also a student —, researcher Muriel Oddenino and marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri.
