INSS Fraud: Opposition must file a mixed CPI request this week

Deputies and opposition senators mobilize to file this week the request for the creation of the Mixed Parliamentary Commission (CPMI) to investigate billionaire fraud at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).

On Saturday (3), Deputy Colonel Fernanda (PL-MT) and Senator Damares Alves (Republicans-DF) stated that they surpassed the application to be filed: 171 deputies and 27 senators.

After the application is published, it will be up to the President of the National Congress, David Alcolumbre (Union-AP), read the document during the Joint Session of the House and Senate. After reading the application, CPMI may be officially installed, with the indication of full and alternate members.

The bet of opposing investing in one and senators is an attempt to circumvent the tight scenario for the installation of a exclusive Parliamentary Committee (CPI) of the House of Representatives.

Last week, Deputy Colonel Chrisóstomo (PL-RO), filed CPI’s request in the House. However, the president of the house, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said there is a list of 12 other CPIs awaiting installation.

According to the House Internal Rules, the house can only have up to five CPIs in operation simultaneously. Therefore, the group decided to resort to the Joint Commission, which should have a faster proceeding.

Opposition presses

The Commission intends to investigate fraud schemes in social security benefits, as well as identifying possible failures in control systems and holding public or private agents involved in the irregularities.

“We cannot treat this as an isolated case, it is a scheme with branches and we need to find out with depth and responsibility,” said Mrs Coronel Fernanda last week.

In addition to pressuring the installation of CPMI, the opposition has criticized to assume the head of the Ministry of Social Security. He took the place of Carlos Lupi, who resigned last week after the investigation of the.

On Saturday (3), Senator Damares Alves filed a popular action in the Federal Court of Brasilia, to. Damares argues that he “presided over the 303rd CNPS meeting in April 2024, in which a report on fraud was read. Even in the face of evidence of irregularities, he took action to protect the victims.”

In the same line, the leader of the PL in the House, Deputy Sostenes Cavalcante (RJ), asked the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) the removal of Wolney from office. In the request, he also asks the former executive secretary to be investigated by omission, violation of the principles of public administration and supervening morality.
