Retail trade remained with the activities of higher margin rates

Trade recovered after the pandemic period of, registering 10.5 million people employed in 2023, an increase of 3.5% compared to 2019, the year before the sanitary crisis in. In the same interval, the number of companies that sell over the internet grew 97.6%, reaching 3,700. The information is part of the Annual Commerce Survey (PAC) 2023, released this Thursday (7) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics ().

PAC also found that the trade sector reached net operating revenue of R $ 7.1 trillion and gross added value of R $ 1.2 trillion in 2023. Salaries, withdrawals and other remuneration totaled R $ 352.7 billion. The number of companies reached 1.5 million, with 1.7 million local units – that is, counting branches.

PAC, which collects data from predominantly commercial companies throughout Brazil, interviewed 80,000 of them in this edition. The research covers three main segments: vehicle trade, parts and motorcycles; Wholesale trade; and retail trade; and 22 activity groups.

Since the beginning of the historical series, there has been alternation in leadership between wholesale trade and the retailer in terms of net operating revenue. From 2020, wholesale increased his participation, but registered slight retraction in 2023, when he added $ 3.5 trillion, while the retail totaled $ 2.9 trillion. The trade of vehicles, parts and motorcycles totaled R $ 646.2 billion.

The IBGE pointed out that, among the 22 activities of activity, the trade of motor vehicles was the one that lost the most participation in the total revenue of the sector, with a drop of 2.2 percentage points between 2014 and 2023, to 5.7%. What advanced the most (3.2 pp) was the wholesale trade of agricultural raw materials at 6.3%.

Retail trade remained with the activities of higher margin rates (39.1%), followed by trade in vehicles, parts and motorcycles, which registered an index of 23.4%, exceeding wholesale trade, which in 2023 obtained 22.5%. In terms of employee remuneration, the historical series obtained its highest value, of two minimum wages for the trade sector as a whole.
