Reformed are called to work to avoid 'chaos' in this destination in the Mediterranean that was 'invaded' by tourists

With the sharp growth of tourism in various parts of Europe, new challenges arise to keep services working with quality. The scarcity of Cyprus workers led to the implementation of an unusual solution: renovated between 55 and 65 years old are being invited to return to the asset to fill vacancies in hotels and other tourist units on the island. The measure comes at a time when the number of visitors continues to increase, according to the Daily Express newspaper.

Lack of labor in the tourist sector

With the increase in tourism, the scarcity of professionals available to work in hospitality has become more evident in several units in Cyprus. It is estimated that about 49,592 people are currently employed directly in this sector. However, this total has been insufficient to respond to all requirements.

Passyxe Hotel Association President Thanos Michaelides addressed this theme at a recent meeting. The scarcity of qualified labor was pointed out as one of the main concerns of the sector today.

Reintegration of professionals with more experience

To collect this lack, the Passyxe Association presented a proposal that intends to reintegrate reformed between the ages of 55 and 65 in the sector. This initiative seeks to take advantage of knowledge and professional baggage accumulated over the years.

The posts to be occupied by retirees focus mainly on reception functions and administrative tasks. According to the same source, these occupations are compatible with the profile of those who have already held positions in similar contexts.

According to Thanos Michaelides, “this is a practical way to return quality to the sector and provide a second career to qualified professionals.”

International example

The proposal follows the example of a similar measure applied to Norway during a period of great expansion of tourism. The Norwegian experience served as a reference for the strategy now delineated in Cyprus. The intention is to reinforce the available labor without compromising the quality standards required by tourist activity. At the same time, a new opportunity is offered to retirees who wish to stay active.

New proposals for accommodation

Another initiative released by Passyxe involves the construction of new accommodation for professionals in the sector. The proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Interior of Cyprus, to obtain the respective construction authorizations, as referred to in the source mentioned above.

The creation of housing dedicated to workers aims to facilitate the recruitment of personnel from other areas, avoiding prolonged travel and promoting greater stability. According to the previously mentioned source, with this measure it is intended to attract more professionals and ensure greater permanence in the functions.

Positive impact on the hotel sector

By reinforcing the conditions offered to professionals, a positive impact on the performance of hotel units is expected. Stable and experience teams will be able to ensure more agile and satisfactory service for those visiting the country.

The appreciation of workers and the qualification of services are considered essential pillars for the sustainable development of the tourism sector in Cyprus, according to the newspaper.

Also know that, according to Eurostat data, Cyprus is one of the countries of the European Union with the largest number of nights passed by tourists per inhabitant, which helps to explain the growing impact of tourism on the daily life of the local population.
