UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that he is “seriously alarmed” with the Israeli government’s decision to take control of the city of Gaza.
“This marks a dangerous climb and risks aggravating the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians. It can put even more lives at risk, including the remaining hostages,” Guterres said in an X post.
Repeated appeals for a permanent ceasefire, “unrestricted” humanitarian access through Gaza and the release of the hostage remaining.
A statement by the Guterres spokesman also asked Israel to comply with international law.
The statement takes place amid international pressure against the occupation of the territory.
The Israeli Security Office approved, on Friday (8), to occupy the city of Gaza after almost 10 hours of votingdetermining that the defense forces prepare to take the place.
Previously, in an interview with FoxNewsthe premie had signaled but maximalist goals, noting that Israel intended to assume total control of the territory. However, the leader faced wide rejection of allies and softened the rhetoric before the cabinet meeting.
“Gaza will be demilitarized and a peaceful civil administration will be established, one other than the Palestinian authority, neither Hamas nor any other terrorist organization,” he said on social networks.
