Foundation was deactivated after suspicions of slogans, but not before having collected more than 50 thousand euros in the name of the player who passed away tragically a month and a half ago.
An alleged solidarity foundation, created in the name of Diogo Jota, was disabled this Thursday, after serious suspicions of fraud.
The site, “diogojotafoundation.org”, was recorded only three days after the death of the Portuguese international, who died on July 3 in a road accident in Spain, along with his brother, André Silva.
It was presented as a support institution for young footballers and needy students, claiming to have distributed thousands of meals, aided hundreds of children and established dozens of partnerships. But the only method of donation available was through cryptocurrencies. The site led the contributor to an external platform, where they could contribute, but only in the form of virtual currency, to which the trail is easily lost.
According to, the page displayed logos from various prestigious entities, including Liverpool, UNICEF, Allianz and the Portuguese NGO platform for development.
Until the moment this article is written, three of these institutions confirmed that the British newspaper had no relation to the project and denounced the improper use of its brands.
Also the Liverpool and Diogo Jota’s family guaranteed to completely unaware of the alleged foundation. Also the UK Charity Commission confirmed that it did not receive any request for registration from the organization.
The organization collected more than $ 64,000 (about 55 thousand euros) in donationsaccording to the site. Until then, the accused organization did not respond to contacts by phone or email.
Despite the false foundation, Diogo Jota has an official and legitimate tribute. Liverpool has already announced that its own foundation, LFC Foundation, will launch a training program on behalf of the Portuguese striker, perpetuating the memory of the club’s nightgown 20.
