Reuters, La Nación, The Guardian, Forbes and BCC were some of the agencies and vehicles that spoke about the judgment of the former president
The vote of the minister of the conviction of the former president (PL) and the other seven members of the “crucial core” of the coup plot on Tuesday (9) reflected in the international press. The Reuters news agency was one of the first to report the case, highlighting the fact that Moraes ranked the former President of the Republic as the leader of a criminal group that tried to nullify the result of the 2022 elections. In the same line, the British newspaper The Guardian also cited this part of the minister’s vote.
“The accusations stem from a comprehensive investigation that revealed alleged conspiracies, including plans to poison President Lula and his mate, as well as murdering Moraes, who has supervised the 2022 elections and now presides over the judgments related to the coup,” says an excerpt from the Reuters report, which was also published by the Argentine newspaper La Nación.
Reuters also mentioned the debate about who could succeed Bolsonaro as the main name of the Brazilian right. The report cited the recent political movements of the Governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), including his visit to Brasilia to broaden the support for a project to amnesty those convicted by January 8. Already the Spanish newspaper El País stamped on its headline. “The judgment is historical, but does not eradicate radicalization in Brazil.” The vehicle also published an opinion text that sees the moment as a unique opportunity for the country to strengthen its democratic regime. “Brazil has a historic opportunity to consolidate its democracy,” wrote the newspaper.
Forbes magazine, in its version in Mexico, published a text about the early minutes of Alexandre de Moraes’s vote, in which the minister emphasized the attempt to sabotage to the constitutional system. The publication also stressed the minister’s statement that the plot had as “very clear objective” to circumvent the judiciary’s brake and counterweight system and “remain in power”.
The BBC highlighted the growing pressure on Jair Bolsonaro after the vote of Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Already the Spanish agency EFE emphasized the part of the trial dealing with the alleged attack plan against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and Minister Moraes himself – a point that, according to the rapporteur, is proven in the file. “The Bolsonaro trial judge says the plan to murder Lula is” widely proven, “wrote Efe. The agency also pointed out that Bolsonaro is getting closer to a conviction. “Bolsonaro is closer to being convicted of a coup conspiracy in Brazil after the votes of the first two judges,” the publication wrote.
