“We go to Memphis. We will make it, as we did with it. ” In these words, he chose from Fox News’s frequency to announce its preparation for the development of its forces in this Tennessee city, describing its case as “deeply problematic” in terms of crime.
The US president’s decision does not come as a thunderbolt in the air, after only 30 days on a similar initiative on the US capital, and while in the meantime he had made it clear that it was a pattern that would be repeated in other major US. The treaty, however, is completely different.
Ideological initiatives
The first noticeable difference concerns the climate within which this initiative takes place. The murder of Trump’s hyper -conservative political activist and hot supporter, Charlie Kerk, comes to increase political polarization sharply, creating the risk of many unpredictable “downstream” tension.
Trump himself hastened to address warnings of non -violent reaction to his supporters, having previously stated that he had attacked the “radical left” again, stating: “We must defeat the radical leftist psychopaths. We have to hit them hard. “
This shift reveals a second difference. While until recently the president’s narrative focused on the relaxed anti -criminal policy of the Democrats, now the “arrows” seem to have an ideological direction, not at all irrelevant to the intermediate elections and political sovereignty. In this regard, a number of ideological initiatives, such as the criminal prosecution of those who haunt the American flag and immediate interventions even in places such as museums, should be seen.
A new kind of regularity
At the same time, the consolidation of a model of constant repression is about the long -term conservative values as a new kind of regularity that defines the country’s political life. In this light, it is not only a coincidence that Trump left open the possibility of the army to be used, in a festive – if this happens – a lineup of all militaristic symbols in which the traditional American Right is taught.
It is noteworthy that before Memphis the US president had left suspicions of intervention in New Orleans, ratifying that he is facing the National Guard more as a team of emergency, accountable to his political priorities.
“It is alarming what is happening, considering that the same president who removes resources from marginalized urban communities with large populations of black citizens, is at the same time militant,” said Christina Green, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Political Science. It is worth noting that 63% of Memphis’ population are black, while in the first half of 2025 there was a decline in crime by 13%.
There is also a parallel political message with his own potential. Memphis’ choice as the next field of state repression came after the strong resistance of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor Jay Bi Prichker (both Democrats). Trump’s willingness to practice power in cooperation and consultation with state and municipal authorities – although Memphis has a democratic mayor of Tennessee is considered a Republican stronghold – shows that even he has limits, especially when they are tested by the opposing side.
