Talking about the Algarve without mentioning luxury hotels and resorts is almost impossible. The region, which every year receives thousands of visitors, Portuguese and foreigners, is recognized by elegant developments, careful gardens and amenities designed in detail. Between both glamor, however, there are buildings that were forgotten in time, as well as the “largest abandoned luxury hotel” in the country, as categorized by NIT.
The project that promised to be a success
One of the most striking cases is the Ocean Ville, located in the center of Albufeira. According to NIT, it was inaugurated in 2007 as a four -star hotel, with 100 bedrooms and about 80 fires for the second housing. A year later, I closed doors and never reopened.
Vasco Alves, a 23 -year -old Filmmaker, said he had discovered the space by chance during a vacation in the Algarve. On a night out with friends, he came across a “gigantic building, which stood out for his grandeur”. Curiosity led them to explore what was left of that project.
Difficult entry and inner contrast
According to the same source, the hotel was completely locked and surrounded. The only way to enter was to scale a wall of earth with the help of a rope left in place. Inside, the young explorer found a reality of contrasts. On the one hand, architecture let see the ambition of the venture; On the other hand, everything was empty, covered in dust and delivered to silence.
Ocean Ville even received guests for a few months and even had an inauguration party. However, in 2008, at the height of the financial crisis that spread the US real estate bubble to Europe, it definitely closed.
The weight of the BPN crisis
Writes the website that the hotel depended on financing from the Portuguese Banco de Business (BPN), then integrated into the Lusa Business Society Group (SLN). The group’s insolvency, marked by accusations of fraud and mismanagement, also dragged this tourist project.
For Vasco Alves, the signs found at the site show that the building will have been to go into remodeling, but have never been completed. The result was a luxurious but unfinished space that was abandoned at the height of his promise.
The view that impresses
The real jewel was at the top. Rooftop access was done through runners and degraded stairs. The reward was one of the best views on Albufeira. “It looked like we had the whole Algarve at our feet,” the young man described to NIT.
In his, Vasco Alves reinforced this experience by classifying Ocean Ville as “the largest abandoned luxury hotel”, sharing images and videos of the exploration.
Still, they didn’t spend much time to contemplate the sunset. Strange noises, which suggested the presence of someone inside, led the group to leave quickly.
A luxury ‘ghost’
Today, Ocean Ville remains one of the largest abandoned hotels in the country. Imposing abroad, empty inside, is a symbol of the financial crisis that left deep marks in the region. A reminder that not all the luxury that reaches the Algarve can resist proof of time and economic instability.
