The Drouot Auction Hall in Paris exhibited on Thursday unknown painting Pablo Picasso. It is a portrait of his longtime partner and muse Dora Maar painted in 1943 and owned by the family of its first owner since 1944, AFP reported. This painting was issued on the occasion of its inclusion in the auction with a starting price of eight million euros.

Picasso painted her portrait on July 11, 1943. In August 1944 it was won by a French collector, grandfather of contemporary owners. Current owners decided to sell the image within the inheritance settlement.
Picasso Agnès Svestre-Barbé expert said at the presentation that This work was “unknown to the public and has never been exhibited – except for the Paris Master’s studio”. She added that this is “an extraordinary work that represents an important milestone in the history of IV Picasso’s art”.
Maar is captured in the picture with a melancholic expression in the face and a brightly colored floral hat. The painting was created when Picasso and Maar broke up for his new love Françoise Gilot. Their turbulent nine -year -old relationship began in 1936 and, according to some sources, contributed to the revival of Picasso’s creative inspiration.
Dora Maarová was the most important model and inspiration for Picasso – about 60 Picasso’s works are founded. However, the dramatic breakup with the artist was thrown into depression.
Sales of Picasso’s works are an important indicator of the state of the art market that has seen a decline in recent years. According to Artprice data, his works for $ 223 million were sold in 2024 – about a third of the $ 597 million that was spent by buyers a year before.
