France President Emmanuel Macron formalized the recognition of the state of Palestine on Monday (22). The announcement was made during a conference on the UN focused on the two -state solution – aimed at peaceful coexistence between a Palestinian state and the Israeli state.
“The time has come. That’s why, faithful to my country’s historical commitment to the Middle East, to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, I declare that today France recognizes the state of Palestine,” Macron said.
Macron drew attention to the situation in the Gaza Strip and also called for the release of Hamas’s hostages.
United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognized the Palestinian state on Sunday (21).
Although the summit in New York has a strong meaning, it is not expected to bring changes in practice, as the government of Israel has stated that there will be no Palestinian condition as long as it continues its struggle against Hamas.
Israel and the United States boycotted the meeting, and the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, classified the event as a “circus.”
During a speech at the conference, UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the liberation of all Hamas hostages, noting that nothing can justify the attack of 7 October 2023.
“Without two states, there will be no peace in the Middle East, and radicalism will spread around the world,” said Guterres.
