How do you discover an object that you cannot see due to the circumstances, for example when it is hidden deep in the sand, is covered by cloudy water or disappears into the thick fog? A research team from the Langevin Institute in Paris and the Vienna University of Applied Sciences has developed a method for such cases that is based on mathematical tricks: With the help of a newly developed “fingerprint matrix”, hidden structures can be detected even in opaque environments.
