South American nation bets on Brazilian technology to revolutionize its daily financial transfers and boost the economy
Colombia has just launched Bre-B, an instant payments system inspired by the Brazilian digital model Pix. Created by Banco de la República, the project allows transfers and payments 24 hours a day, with immediate settlement between banks and fintechs.
It follows Pix do Brasil principles: use of identification keys, QR Codes and mandatory interoperability between institutions.
The expectation is to reduce the use of cash and expand financial inclusion, especially for those who do not yet have a bank account.
Country copies Brazil and launches payment system identical to Pix
Bre-B was developed with technical support from Brazilian companies, such as EBANX and Dock, and already has more than 30 million registered users, which represents around 76% of the country’s adult population.
Although inspired by Pix, the Colombian system will have security limits and expansion stages, starting with transfers between people and payments to companies.
Each user has, on average, two registered keys and two linked payment methods, which shows the rapid adoption of the system. Alphanumeric keys are the most popular, followed by cell phone number, email and identification document.
To use, simply access the Bre-B button on any financial institution application or website, choose the recipient’s key and confirm the identity to complete the transfer. The amount is credited in seconds, regardless of the originating institution.
The goal is to reach the entire market by 2026, consolidating Colombia as a new hub for financial innovation in Latin America.
With this, the country is once again entering the era of instant payments, promoting financial inclusion and agility in transactions.
