ANJ (National Association of Newspapers) will award the 2025 ANJ Press Freedom Award to .
The honor recognizes people or institutions that stood out in promoting and defending freedom of the press — or whose actions reinforce the importance of this principle for democracy. The ceremony will take place on December 4th, in the ESPM Tech auditorium, in São Paulo.
Instituto Palavra Aberta is a non-profit organization that works to defend freedom of expression, freedom of the press and access to information. The organization publishes a Sheet.
The tribute celebrates the institute’s 15 years of activity, founded in August 2010 by , the ANJ, the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert) and the then Brazilian Association of Advertising Agencies (Abap), currently the Collective Articulation Space of the Advertising Ecosystem.
The entity’s executive president is Patricia Blanco, who is part of the Editorial Board of Sheet. The organization also has 25 advisors, including journalists Roberto Muylaert and Mônica Waldvogel, university professor Eugênio Bucci and the president of Grupo Folha, Judith Brito.
“Over its 15 years, Palavra Aberta has become one of the main institutions in defense of freedom of expression and the press in Brazil. And it went further, also acting in a structural way against disinformation, by extending its scope to the increasingly necessary media education”, says Marcelo Rech, executive president of ANJ.
After the award ceremony, there will be the panel “AI and the future of journalism”, coordinated by Marta Gleich, executive director of Journalism and Sport at Grupo RBS. Participating in the debate will be Sérgio Dávila, editorial director at Sheet; Eurípedes Alcântara, Director of Journalism at Grupo Estado; Alan Gripp, editorial director of the newspaper O Globo; and Patricia Blanco.
In 2024, the honoree was president emeritus of the RBS Group and honorary member of ANJ.
The previous year, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for its work promoting freedom of expression and protecting journalists.
In 2022, the lawyer, from Sheetwas recognized for her work in defending press freedom; the Tornavoz Institute, of which she is the founder, was also mentioned in the tribute.
In 2021, the Press Media Consortium —formed by SheetUOL, O Globo, G1, Extra and O Estado de S. Paulo — and Projeto Comprova for disseminating pandemic data and combating misinformation.
