The announced departure of the minister during this Thursday’s plenary session (9) opens a new challenge for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: choosing a “suitable” replacement. The statement was made by the government leader in the National Congress, senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP). Randolfe Rodrigues mentioned some names that he considers qualified for the position. “I think we have a lot of good names in place. It’s named after the (former) president (of the Senate) Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), it’s named after the attorney general of the Union, minister (Jorge) Messias”, he declared.

The senator highlighted that the final decision will be made by Lula, after dialogue. “The president will talk. The choice is a unilateral act by the president of the Republic. The president of the Senate (Davi Alcolumbre) should talk to the president of the Republic in the next few hours, and the president will find a name worthy of Barroso”, continued Randolfe. The government leader also made a point of praising Luís Roberto Barroso’s career in the STF. “Barroso was a public man who fulfilled his duties with enormous love for Brazil, dedication and zeal for Justice and Brazilians,” he stated.

In a more relaxed tone, Randolfe joked when referring to Rodrigo Pacheco. “I believe it will be a brief decision. The president will find someone equal to Luís Roberto Barroso. President Pacheco is taller”, he commented. Luís Roberto Barroso, aged 67, leaves the STF before reaching the age limit of 75 years, provided for by the 1988 Constitution. The name indicated by Lula will go through a hearing and will need the approval of the Federal Senate, in accordance with the constitutional rite.
