An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook the southeastern part of the Philippines on Friday night, confirmed by the US Geological Survey (USGS). This happened a week after two strong earthquakes hit the country, killing at least eight people. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
“We felt sudden strong tremors, but it only lasted for a very short time,” local rescuer Ralph Cadalena told AFP, adding that any casualties or damage were not immediately reported.
According to the USGS, the earthquake struck an area near the municipality of Dapa in Surigao del Norte province at a depth of approximately 69 kilometers. Exactly one week ago, two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.4 and 6.7 shook the eastern part of the Philippines’ second largest island, Mindanao, which claimed eight lives.
In late September and early October, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake killed 76 people and destroyed or damaged 72,000 homes in Cebu province in the central Philippines, according to government figures. The Philippines lies in the so-called The Ring of Fire, a zone of frequent occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, encircles the base of the Pacific Ocean.
