Autumn is the time when the bird breeding season ends, and with it you can finally start cleaning your gardens and plots. Since mid-October, regulations allow the removal of trees, but only under certain conditions.

In accordance with applicable regulations, Tree cutting can be carried out from October 16 to the end of Februarybecause there is no bird breeding during this period. The ban applies from March 1 to October 15, when most protected species lay eggs and raise their young. Garden work that could disturb their habitat is prohibited during this time. From October 16, 2025, plot owners can trim and remove trees without any problems. Unless they are protected species and do not require a special permit. This period will last until February 28, 2026.

Not every tree requires the consent of the commune or city office. No notification is necessary if the tree trunk does not exceed the specified circumference at a height of 5 cm. For individual species, the limits are:

  • 80 cm — in the case of poplars, willows, ash-leaved maple and silver maple,
  • 65 cm — for horse-chestnut, black locust and maple-leafed plane tree,
  • 50 cm — for other species.

A permit is also not required for trees and shrubs growing on private land if they are removed for purposes unrelated to business activity. You can also remove shrubs with an area of ​​up to 25 square meters, as well as fruit trees (unless they grow in a historic or protected green area) without consent.

Before you start removing the tree, make sure that its circumference does not exceed the permissible values, a the works do not pose a threat to animals. In case of doubt, it is best to contact the environmental protection department at the municipal office. There you will also receive information whether a permit or notification is required.
